During our interview with Joshua Becker on owning less and living more he inspires us to begin living a minimalist lifestyle. Here are three simple action steps.
1. START EASY!
Joshua started with his car. He got rid of toys, CDs, maps, etc. Then he moved into his living room. Pick an easy, visual space like your living room.
2. ASK, “What do I NOT NEED IN THIS room?”
Take a box and start putting things you do not need into it. These could be decorations that do not have meaning, extra DVDs or CDs (uh, blankets?). Live for a while and see if you enjoy the benefit of living with less.
3. BE MINDFUL AND INTENTIONAL.
It is a mindset change.
DECIDE you will live with less and then be mindful and intentional about it. Notice the ads, messages and media that bombard you. LIMIT those messages. Learn to SPEND your money elsewhere. Be mindful of your purchases. Notice things throughout the day that you can get rid of. Keep a donate bin going at all times.
BEWARE of the BIGGEST OBSTACLE
Do not immediately JUMP to the hardest things for you to get rid of. Don’t go there yet! Just go to a drawer or room and remove the things you can live without!
It is an emotional process…journey inward.
How would your life improve if you owned less stuff?
