Day 16 – Assignment: Empty the bottom shelf in the small bookcase. Name piles. Decide what to keep and decide where items will live.
Moving to the next step. We interviewed Kathy Lipp on our show this week. Listen here. She talked about taking the next step to make progress. This can apply to organizing, eating healthy, exercising or whatever. Don’t get so overwhelmed by the big picture. Break it down. Take the next step, and the next and the next.
So the next step was fresh on our minds as we continued to work in my office. The next step was to clear the bottom shelf of my small white bookcase. We emptied the shelf on the floor.
Next, and somewhat coincidentally, Tracy’s cell phone rang so she spent the next 15 minutes talking to a “client” in the hall outside my office. I named piles and sorted the items on the floor. Notebooks, papers, phone directories, books.
Tracy appeared again as I was finishing. Hmmm. We did work together then to decide where the piles of like items would live. The cool thing about this step was that there were already places to put things so this was pretty easy.
We put the directories with my cards and stationery file. Notebooks and paper back on the shelf. Tracy made some notes along the way for containers and other products we could use like a metal divider to keep the folders upright and separated. I did try to use a lid sorter I had in my pantry but it didn’t fit on the shelf.
I had a few items for the elsewhere pile as well. I put the volleyball book on the top shelf for now. We will deal with that when we get to that shelf, I do know I want to keep it.
Time was up! The floor was cleared and more items had a permanent home.
Tomorrow? The next step.
