Day 7 – Assignment: Same ‘ol…Set your timer for 20 minutes and continue to sort.
Remember, this same assignment, touching each item and placing it in a pile with like items, continues as long as it takes. Sometimes it takes a long time. Especially when you are organizing a whole room!
We have moved around the room and are now to Chelle’s desk and built in shelves.
Let’s talk about what to do with things that require action. Things you find that require some extra thought as to where they will go. For example, we found flash drives and CDs that were not labeled. Chelle wasn’t sure what was on them. In order to find out she would have to get on the computer and open each one. Do not stop while you are sorting to find out. Here is what you do:
- Place them in a pile with like items. We put Chelle’s in a pile called Electronics.
- Wait to make any decisions until you get to the next step which is Decide. So for now leave them in the electronics pile and continue sorting.
- During the Decide step go back through your electronics pile deciding what you will keep or toss. It is during this step you still may not want to take the time to look at each CD and flash drive. SCHEDULE this activity on your calendar. Leave them in the final home you create. But, they NEED to be scheduled on your calendar so this task gets done.
If you are organizing a whole room tape up a piece of paper on the wall and write these tasks on it.
Paper is another thing everyone has that requires more action. Make a pile named Paper To Go Through. Schedule a time to go through the paper in detail. You could even create another pile called Very Important Papers/To File if you absolutely know you need to keep a paper. Be sure to schedule a time to file papers later.
Here is a problem. Bible studies that I finished and really enjoyed. I always think I will go back and reread the parts that impacted me. I’m still waiting for that to happen as of yet.
I think I might start a new policy where I keep a bible study for 6 months. If I haven’t looked at it I will burn the pages filled with my most intimate thoughts. On the other hand, maybe the recycling workers would get some reassurance that at least they’re not as messed up as I am sometimes. Even better, I might find my pages on the cover of Star magazine with the title, Mother of Two Has Pride Issues, but that is probably tattooed on my forehead. Oh well.
NOTE: Chelle decided she would throw out the Bible study that night. She still has a little twinge of regret as she remembers this. But it is nothing that a mocha chai tea frappe latte won’t cure.
These feelings are normal.
