The next phase of the organizing process is to sort your belongings. This is when you decide what belongings to keep and what to let go. Yikes! Did I just tell you to let go of some of your things?
It’s time, to be honest. We all have too many things.
Too much stuff causes
- and confusion in our lives.
Sort it all out with the following 5 tips.
Use three containers for sorting: Trash, recycle, and donate or sell. Have them next to you while you sort. I like to use paper bags to hold the recycle and donate items.
Sort a small area (for example a drawer) and distribute the items you decide to “let go” into one of the three containers. Items that belong in another room may be placed in a container or near the room’s exit.
Unless an emergency arises, do not leave the area you are sorting. You will lose focus, and the next thing you know you are on Facebook or putting a load of laundry in the washer.
Be ruthless! Toss broken items and donate items you no longer use or like. This is not the time to agonize over your decisions or second guess yourself. Trust your gut and remember your goal of getting organized. Your abundance may benefit others that are in need.
Group similar items together. You will then know how many you have and may be able to let some of those “extras” go.
When you finish sorting an area, put the donations in your car. Drive them to your favorite charity ASAP!
Set your timer and get started!
