The last week of LOVE Is In The Air month we are focusing on LOVING Your Home. Today we talk about ways to love your home more. Listen here. Keeping it simple we chose to focus on 5 things we could do to love our homes more. Not hard. Not expensive. And, no, not moving to a new house!
Choose one of these ideas and schedule it. Block out time in your calendar to do it!
CLEAN a Room From Top to Bottom
Pick one room in your home and really CLEAN it. Start by removing everything that doesn’t belong in the room. Purge, declutter and then begin cleaning. Start at the top by dusting the light fixture or ceiling fan and then work your way down and around. Wipe the cobwebs, dust the shelves, disinfect the door knobs, vacuum with the attachment around the edge of the carpet, under the bed, in the couch crevices, mop the floor, etc.
See how different you feel afterward. There is nothing else like a good sweat and a clean room! You might just want to stay in that room and enjoy a tall glass of ice water when you finish!
Here is Chelle’s favorite new cleaning product.
Next month, during Managing March Madness, we will be airing our interview with Becky from Clean Mama. She’ll give us extra cleaning tips. But, don’t wait until next month to clean a room from top to bottom!
As always, ask for help. If this task seems overwhelming then hire out help or have a friend come over.
TWEAK the Lighting
Lighting can make an amazing difference in our experience of a room. For each room in your home, count the light sources. Aim for at least three but preferably more. If you have overhead lighting consider putting the fixtures on dimmer switches. Supplement with table and floor lamps.
By changing out a lamp shade, adding an uplight or dimming the overhead light you can change the whole feel of a room.
You hear it all the time. PAINT. It is relatively cheap, it has a big impact and it smells clean and fresh when you’re done.
Tracy changed her daughters’ room by painting the furniture. See more photos, her explanation of how she did the stripes plus the lamp she mentioned on the show here.
Chelle painted a dresser she found at a flea market and now uses it as a storage piece in her office.
Apartment Therapy features Laurel’s transformation of an old IKEA cabinet into a show piece here.
You can even paint a tree stump, add some studs and create a cute side table!
ADD a New Fabric
Adding a bright new color of fabric into your decor will do wonders. It will brighten your mood, change the look and give opportunity for additional pops of color…especially now that spring is coming!
Another easy way to add fabric is through your drapes. I see a lot of panels for sale but so often they are too short. Then, I found a solution to that problem…a DIY to lengthen them!
Remember to use different textures, too. Here is Chelle’s favorite saying on burlap.
Just by adding fun, new shelf liner under my sink and in my makeup drawer my day is brightened EVERY time I’m in my bathroom.
This is the Macbeth Collection Self Adhesive Liner available to order on Amazon or occasionally I find it at Marshalls/Home Goods.
SPRUCE Up Your Front Entry
It is the first thing people see. You could paint the front door, add a stencil, find an urn and plant a few flowers, or make a bright, fun wreath.
Keep it really simple by adding a little hello stencil.
Don’t want hello on your door what about stenciling the glass. Check this great DIY on stenciling the glass next to the door.
HGTV before and after curb appeal photos are fun to look at. Even if you just took one idea from the picture to incorporate it could help you love your home more.
