We are approaching the perfect time of year to organize your garage…which means purging some of the “stuff” from your home (listen to Joshua Becker’s story about when he was cleaning his garage out here). Once you purge use Jill’s 5 tips to save space in your garage. Thanks, Jill!
Is your garage full of stuff you rarely use while your vehicles are forced to park in the driveway?
Besides our vehicle and a fishing boat, our garage is home to a lot of items. Most of this stuff belongs to my husband, a fishing/outdoor enthusiast.
He also is the “saver” in the family. “You never know when you are going to need a piece of an old bicycle inner tube; let’s save it,” he tells me. He’ll save potentially useful items, not everything, and he has these items organized so he can find them again.
Even though he is a saver, we haven’t run out of room nor have we had to add a shed for storage.
How do we manage to store so much in our garage? Here are 5 tips.
1. Use the garage walls for vertical storage.
Save the floor space for your vehicles. Use the walls for yard tools, sporting equipment and more.
2. Use the ceiling and rafters for storage.
Look up and see all the potential your ceiling has to offer. Slide seldom used or seasonal items onto the rafters. Hang items from the ceiling or rafters with garage hooks. Our garage has so many items hanging on the wall and ceiling, its borderline crazy. We even have a canoe suspended from the ceiling.
3. Install shelving along the walls or even hanging from the rafters.
Coolers, outdoor decorations and camping equipment can sit on shelves.
4. Think outside the box.
Use laundry baskets or plastic dish tubs to contain small items like balls, car care items or jars of screws and nails.
5. Regularly break down and recycle empty boxes.
Regularly break all your boxes down so they aren’t taking up precious storage space.
