I’m attacking my house 1 project at a time in this Summer Project Series. I am tackling projects that have been on my to-do list. It feels good to check them off.
Project #3 was my Front Porch Makeover. I used a lot of what I had to keep the project cheap. I already had an iron trellis (Hobby Lobby), a lantern (Nell Hill’s), a table and a black urn.
I wanted to add plants, hang string lights and make an orb for the urn. I hadn’t done much to my porch since I took the Christmas decorations down…in April.
I kind of started this project months ago but never finished. I had previously purchased the globe string lights and just draped them over the trellis. Nice look. I especially like the tags sticking out. I found the WELCOME sign at Target. I hung the sign with burlap ribbon. This is how the porch has looked until this week.
I started out by making an orb. Are you familiar with orbs?
I saw this one at Target for $29.99. The Diva of DIY, Leanne Lee showed Tracy and me how to make our own for about $7.00 using inexpensive embroidery hoops. Watch that video tutorial and Leanne’s other DIY projects here.
This is how you can make an orb like mine.
- 2 Sets of embroidery hoops
I bought mine at Hobby Lobby and used coupons so they ended up costing about $4.00 for both sets together. Each set has two hoops in it. I wanted a large orb so I bought 14 inch hoops.
- Thumb tacks or upholstery nails
Surprisingly, I found these upholstery nails in a box of my sewing notions. Probably been there since the 90’s.
- Black spray paint for outdoor use
- Rubber gloves – get them from your sunless tanning supplies or visit your nearest proctologist
- Black socks to keep paint off your feet or shoes
I borrowed my husband’s. 🙂
Now, lay out hoops to spray paint.
This is where the gloves come in handy. I had to hold them up a little and spray them.
Allow them to dry. Then begin assembling. In each set of hoops there is a larger hoop and a little bit smaller hoop. Start by sliding the two larger hoops together.
The 14 inch hoops have these blocks where the tightening screw is contained. Line these up perpendicularly.
Then insert the two smaller diameter hoops.
Adjust the hoops to make a sphere shape.
Push the embroidery nails (tacks) through to secure. A little bit larger and longer tacks than I used would have been better. They barely made it through all layers.
Done. I tried it out in the urn.
Now to purchase and add the plants. BTW – all my flowers were buy one get one free! I planted the Vinca and Carita Cascade around the sides of the urn leaving a little space in the middle.
I had a small terracotta pot. I spray painted it, put a plant in it and placed it in the center of the urn. Ta da! I like my orb.
I can’t wait to tell Leanne I made her orb!
Next I spruced up the trellis. I found a long decor branch I had not used for a long time. I stripped the branches and used it on the trellis to add some interest.
I also added some twig garland I had to the trellis to hide the cord of the globe string lights. I like the crackle finish on these lights. They look good during the day when they are not lit up.
I hung a wreath I had to the door.
I don’t claim to be a decorating queen. We love having friends and family at our home. I hope our guests feel welcome when they walk up to the front door.
What projects will you tackle this summer? I would love to see some of your pictures!
