Great reminders, Jill!
Do you drool over the container section at Target? Do you imagine all the possibilities those containers hold and how they are the answer to your organizing prayers? I hate to break it to you, but containers can just become another type of clutter. Especially if you purchase containers before you begin organizing and sorting. Sort of like eating dessert before you eat dinner.
Before you jump in the car and drive to the nearest place to purchase storage containers, there are some things you need to consider.
Sort your stuff before stuffing it into a container.
It’s better to make decisions about what items to keep and what items you no longer need or use before containerizing. Otherwise you are just containing clutter and letting it use your precious storage space.
Do you even need to purchase containers?
Check your basement, spare rooms, garage and closets for containers you may previously have purchased. I know it’s hard to resist purchasing cool new containers, but think of the money saved. In addition, you may have emptied some containers during the sorting phase and now those are available to reuse.
Are containers necessary?
Containers are important, especially for groups of small items, but not everything needs to be containerized. Take stock of the items you decided to keep in the area you are organizing and decide which groups of items actually need containers.
