What is typography?
Typography is the art and technique of arranging type. It includes selecting a typeface – or font as most people refer to it – size, spacing and color. I use my training as a graphic designer and artist to take the words, dates and phrases that are important to my customers and make it into beautiful artwork.
Does your family speak in one word sentences?
Do you dream in single words?
Do you have an obsession with crossword puzzles?
I actually “work” in my sleep quite often! I will design them in my head in the middle of the night. It doesn’t make for a very restful night’s sleep!
How do you begin the process of creating a unique product?
There are 4 basic things the customer needs to figure out.
- What size/format do they want? I offer lustre, wood, burlap and metal prints, gallery-wrapped canvases and keepsake blankets.
- They need to choose their style, which essentially means the font of the words. With 6 different styles to choose from, there’s something that will fit every kind of décor from super modern to traditional, and eclectic to rustic.
- Customers also get to choose the colors that compliment their décor the best.
- And of course, the most important part is choosing their words! They can use names, dates, places, short phrases, anything that is meaningful to them.
A TYPOGRFX allows you to tell your story in artwork form!
What are the most popular color combinations?
There are definitely changing trends in what colors are the most popular. When I first started out 6 years ago, 2-colors were mainly what I used – a colored background with white or black text on it. Then a few years ago, I started doing multiple colors of text and added a variety of background options ranging from modern to rustic. My customers are always glad to hear that I don’t charge extra for multiple colors or any of the backgrounds I offer.
As far as the most popular color schemes, the Jones is probably the most frequently used. It’s brown, cream and tan tones compliment a wide variety of décor, while the Jackson color scheme which incorporates black with brown and tan tones is a little more modern. The Pennington and Ward options are the next most popular and offer a more rustic feel.
A custom typogrfx print is the perfect gift for what occasions?
Any! There are very few occasions that I haven’t created a TYPOGRFX for. In fact, I challenge the readers to come up with a legitimate occasion to give a TYPOGRFX gift for that I haven’t already done. This could be fun!
How do you help people to come up with the words for their print?
I have a whole page on my website on how to choose your words. It gives you general ideas such as names, dates, nicknames, vacation spots, favorite phrases, etc that can help spark an idea for what you might want to include in your own TYPOGRFX. Plus, there are hundreds of samples that show what real customers have chosen.
Will Chelle’s rant against word art in our eBook affect our working relationship?
Absolutely not! I couldn’t agree more with her. A mass-produced piece of artwork bought off the shelf tells me NOTHING about your family – other than you are trying to be just like every other family. A TYPOGRFX tells your story – not some story that’s been so generalized that it could fit any family. Where’s the fun in that?
In addition, as a self-diagnosed “pack rat” I understand a thing or two about holding onto items that bring back memories. All too often these items wind up in boxes stored out sight or worse yet, piled on top of another creating chaos and clutter in a home. I think mentioning a memory on a TYPOGRFX does it more justice than holding onto it as clutter.
Tell us the most inspiring experience you’ve had working on a project?
Out of 1500 designs over the past 6 years, the most inspiring TYPOGRFX I’ve ever created was for Leanne. She reached out to me early last year, and asked me to create a TYPOGRFX with words of wisdom for her three young children. She was nearing the end of her battle with breast cancer and wanted to make sure that her kids had something positive to remember her by. It’s so humbling to know that my art provided her family with some comfort when she passed a few months ago. After her funeral, many of her friends joined together to host a TYPOGRFX pARTy fundraiser in her memory. It was the most successful fundraiser anyone has ever hosted for me. Plus, many of the TYPOGRFXs that were purchased for that fundraiser feature some of the same inspirational sayings on them – such as “I love you forever”, “be kind to one another”, “go barefoot”. It’s amazing to see the impact Leanne had on so many people!
Chelle’s top 10 list of banned words and phrases for your word art.
- Bloody Stump
- Bladder control
- Hot dog fingers
- Cottage cheese thighs
- Eating scabs
- You ruined my life
- Ingrown hairs
- Asparagus pee
What are some strange requests you’ve been asked to include?
I can tell you some of the strangest things that have ever been put on a TYPOGRFX:
- Mt. Dew + Peanut M&Ms = kidney stones (I’d love to know the story behind that one!)
- Abandoned stripmall (ok???)
- Serial killers (scary!)
- I love babies with bald heads
- I gotta guy
